BOWLS HAS RETURNED

OUTDOOR BOWLS RESUMES

Since 29th March 2021 outdoor sports have resumed in England including bowls, which enables us to recommence practice games on our all weather playing surface. Covid restricted guidelines still have to be observed, such as the washing of hands on arrival and departure at the club. The ‘Track & Trace’ system is in place at KBC and bowlers must sign in on this form when arriving at the club. Arrival and departure times should be recorded. The club house and changing rooms can now be used since 17th May. To be safe bowlers should take their bowls and shoes home with them and change outside the club room on the benches before entering or exiting the green. The toilets are open for use but masks should be worn if in proximity to other bowlers.

There is now no need to book a rink through the club secretary. Bowlers can now just turn up to play. There are organised roll-ups every week day afternoon, arriving at 1-00 PM for a 1-15 PM start. There is also an organised friendly mixed roll-up at 6-00 PM on Wednesdays.

During January and February 2021 various directives were generated by British Isles Bowls Council (BIBC) and, in turn, Bowls England. All this information, via emails, were distributed to all bowls club in England.

BIBC have decided to cancel all International competitions/events for 2021, in view of the current Covid-19 crisis. Logistically, it is considered too dangerous owing to potential travel and accommodation arrangements, added to the problem of competitors being in close proximity to each other

Bowls England, however, plan for a full domestic programme during 2021 for national competitions, including county matches. There is optimism with the continued roll out of the vaccine programme in UK and experience from last season’s bowling in a Covid related friendly manner that this can be achieved. This situation extends to club bowls. It is planned that club bowling will be available along with inter-club competitions as confidence increases and Covid vaccinations continue among the general public. It should be added here that the men’s Mid Devon league, the ladies SDLBL and the ‘X’ element of the men’s Over 55’s have been cancelled in their entirety for 2021.

A National Open Week-end is planned for Spring Bank Holiday 28th – 31st May 2021. This will be a national recruitment drive among all bowls clubs to encourage new bowlers to the sport. However, experience has shown us that KBC do not benefit much from so called ‘Open Days’. As an alternative to this, articles with photos have been delivered to the Mid Devon Advertiser & HeraldExpress giving our club some profile.

Further information will be posted when available.
